Pubs and Cafes

Royal George pub,Staithes, near holkiday cottage

PUBS

There are two pubs in the old part of the village, The Cod and Lobster on the Harbour front, recently nicely refurbished and serving good food and often having live music,  and The Royal George on the High Street, a cosy friendly pub. On the top of the bank just above Bellebeck, our holiday cottage in Staithes,  is The Captain Cook Inn which also has live music. At Dalehouse just over the Whitby- Saltburn road is the Fox and Hounds which is particularly good for Sunday Lunch and meals generally. The carvery at The Fox Inn at Roxby is also very good.  This is ideal for a good Sunday morning walk.

CAFES
There are presently 4 cafes; the Seadrift Cafe on the Harbour, The Cleveland Corner Bistro in the lower village, Dotties Tea Room, and The Tea Shop near the car park, all well worth a visit. You will be able to find food, day or evening in a variety of places.

SHOPS

Shops in the village include a very good butchers, Betsy and Bo's, for wonderful chocolate and sweets (and at some point, wine), Lazy Jacks, a new clothing shop, Craft at Cleveland Corner, for all your knitting wools and crafty things, The Kessen Bowl for gifts and seasidey things, The Emporium for items of clothing, jewellery and gifts, and the Vintage/Retro Shop which is a real treat to wander around. There is also a Co-op and various other shops  within easy walking distance.

There is a regular Art and Craft market in St Peters, on Church Street which is open daily during the Summer months and at weekends during less busy times. (Most of the winter weekends it is closed).  This is supplied by local makers and worth a look, you can pick up all sorts of hand made bits and pieces.

CULTURE

Not to be missed is the excellent Staithes Art Gallery and The Captain Cook Museum, a delightfully quirky  museum. Staithes Studio Gallery  has recently opened at Slip Top near the Cod and Lobster offering a very contemporary collection. There are regular painting weekends offered by Staithes Gallery and Print Making Workshops offered by Steph Mitchel of 1, Slip Top, Staithes Studio Gallery.  We are becoming a very cultured place!!

Staithes now has a wonderful Arts and Heritage Festival, usually the 2nd weekend in September.  The dates for 2016 are Saturday 10th and Sunday 11th of September when 60+ cottages are open as pop-up-art galleries, there is music on the streets, workshops and pop up cafes as well as heritage exhibitions and film shows....NOT TO BE MISSED.

Paul and I usually open our home in Staithes as a pop-up gallery during the festival,  last year we were a pop-up cinema and the year before a pop up museum of curiosity. We are having a break in 2016 and enjoying the festival ourselves. Watch out for our Museum of Curiosity in the film below!
